  1. Hey David,

Such a wonderful compilation! I’m also hugely interested in searching for originals of songs covered by HK/Taiwan singers. Your work is by far the best I’ve seen.

A few points to mention though:

    1. A friend of 鈴木キサブローjust wrote me that Keith Brown is the name Mr. Suzuki used when writing the song “smile again”

    2. A mistake in the song “壯志驕陽”: the orignal song should be Kan’s “愛は勝つ” instead of “悲しみは雪のように” which was covered by 巫启贤 once, if I remember it correctly.

    3. 再愛上妳’s original version is Glenn Medeiros’ Me-U=Blue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQOX7dzQY6w

    4. I have the original version of 你是我今生唯一傳奇 back in my home in China. It is in a compilation CD. I just can’t remember the name. Will check it out later.

    5. I believe “In love with you” was an original song since John Laudon, lead vocal of the former HK band Citybeat whose Chinese name is 刘诺生, used to write songs for quite a few HK singers.

    6. 除了這些 還有…’s original song is “被给予的时间结束(주어진 시간 끝에서)”
by 玻璃箱子, a Korean duo band.

    7. 二人世界 is another mistake. This should be an orignal song by Richard Yuen (袁卓繁). The one “二人世界”, whose original song is Timothy B.Schmidt’s So much in Love, should be covered by Alam 林子祥。

    8. 初吻’s original song is Newton Family’s “carnival”.

    9. In the album “祇願一生愛一人”, there is another covered song”Cry”, whose original song is David Halliday “High”。

  2. Thanks for the comment! I knew people were actually viewing my site quite a bit, but you’re the first person who isn’t a relative or personal friend I know that has actually commented on this page (not even talking about the rest of my site yet).

I actually have a list of other cover songs done by other artists, and was even thinking of adding a separate page for that too, but haven’t had the time to do so. Now to tackle some of the issues bit by bit…

    1. That is good to know. Hopefully someone will actually read the comments and see that. Learn something new everyday.

    2. “悲しみは雪のように” was from a bad source, and I thought I’d updated it a long time ago to Kan’s “愛は勝つ”. But thank you for catching that.

5, 7, & 8. I would have to check out and listen to the song myself, before I can actually put down the original title and singer’s information with determination.

    6. Some of the Korean videos aren’t readily available, or are already lost. I have some of the songs downloaded, and haven’t had the time to upload them. I found the particular song you were talking about, but haven’t had a chance to download and upload it here.

Everything else however, I’ve taken your suggestions and updated my site accordingly. Once again, thanks for your comments. I hope to hear again from you whenever you get some more updates, or whenever you can send me samples and information about those other songs.

  3. it is true that there are two songs with the same name”二人世界”, so much in love is another one which was first sung by The Tymes in 1963, Timothy B.Schmidt’s version is just one of those cover versions.

  4. Hellknight,

Sorry for the delay in response. Your first post was caught in my spam box, and I haven’t had much of a chance to update my blogs, with semester finals and many other things going on.

Thank you for posting that URL though. I’ll update the URL as soon as possible, but the information on Timothy B. Smith will stay on there, because it’s who was credited in the original CD. However, thank you once again for clearing that up. Also, “Thank you!” to the many viewers who help me keep this site in check and let me know to update my information.

  5. Great job, David! I have made a blog about canto-pop music vs their originals too… of course Jacky Cheung is on the menu. :) Thought I would share the link here, perhaps you would like to come see and listen some of the original songs someday.

May I also add a few correction/addition to your list:
盡在無言 is a cover song of 井上陽水, the song name should be 新しいラプソディー

    also
總有一天等到你 is a cover song of Ariel Rivera (a Phillipino singer), the song name is Sana Kahit Minsan from the album Simple Lang. This one you can listen in my blog.

Anyhow, still think your list is great! Thanks.

  6. Thanks again!

I checked out your site, and it’s pretty cool that you actually have both the original and Jacky’s version to listen to. AWESOME! Maybe you can help me with the broken links I have on here and find the original stuff for the other songs. Hahaha!

The source I had for 井上陽水’s “新しいラプソディー” merely put in “ラプソディー” I mean… “New Rhapsody” vs “Rhapsody”… I don’t know…

It’s a good thing you pointed out to me about “Sana Kahit Minsan” though. I’m surprised I didn’t have that song listed on the chart (probably did, and then deleted it on accident, because my computer was getting quirky on me again). But originally, I thought it was a Japanese song like most everything is. But I double-checked, and you are correct, it is indeed Phillipino.

  7. As for the link to “親親”, I can’t access the site for some reason. Do you have another source?

  8. The original post was posted by 铅笔小丁. I have tried to open that link myself and couldn’t get through, my anti-virus won’t let me through. We are in the US, I guess. So, if you can’t open some links, probably I can’t either. Anyhow, what is that file? Is it 張學友 – 親親’s original version? or just Jacky’s version? I can try to find alternative source for you. But need to know what it is. :)

  9. Wow! You did a good job researching on this! Why not try Leon Lai’s and Grasshopper’s too! They also like to revise songs from Japanese/English singers. ^^

  10. 張學友 is my favourite singer. I started looking up these songs because I sort of wanted to understand his songs better. I actually have another list filled with other artists and some of their cover songs, but haven’t really come around to posting it up yet.

  11. Happy New Year!~ As for 親親, the original version should be 亲亲 by 姜鄂 from Singapore. It’s weird that you guys can’t open the link as I can open it here in the US. I guess it’s so far the only source online regarding the original song…

  12. Hey Guys!

I NEED SOME HELP! I was going through some stuff, and eventually got to this posting:
    張學友’s 真愛…
    http://tw.knowledge.yahoo.com/question/question?qid=1507122007333

Someone replied and gave a response, but it doesn’t sound like the same song to me. Can you tell me if the music in the background is the same? Maybe the Mandarin version added some extra instruments and notes to it?

WE GOTTA’ GET THIS TABLE FILLED UP!

  13. AWESOME! Thanks again! Also, just to let you know, I’m experimenting with using putting the Jacky Cheung Song Tracker in a subdomain.
    http://jc.davidcong.net

I’m still working out the bugs, but let me know what you think of the theme, and if you have any suggestions for improvement.

  14. Hi David, I just found that I have the originals of the following three songs:

    忘情负义-Nature of Love (by Waterfront)
不准点火-Another man (by One 2 Many)
    Oh No-No (by Newton Family)

I’ll see if I can upload the mp3s somewhere so that you can make links here. Stay tuned. : )

  15. SWEET! Thanks! Good ears on 不准點火. There’s an extra instrument at the beginning in Jacky’s version. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to pick out the original unless I heard it a couple more times.

  16. Many thanks for this site. Just looking through some of the originals to jacky’s versions, jacky is sure to know which tunes would make his album best sellers. Many thanks again

  17. Are you sure that the composer of 思念 is Paul Mauriat? Some materials said that this was originated from Paul Mauriat’s . Well, this is the link of :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCjeEs3r2QQ

And I will check Jacky’s tonight. It seems that I can’t find it in internet.

  18. Yeah, in his later reprints of the CD, it’s credited to Paul Mauriat (as opposed to “Paul Maunat” as the typo was published in all the orignal jackets). You are correct. Thanks for catching that. But then, in the case of this MV, it’s accredited to 羅大佑.
    http://v.ku6.com/show/0YtHe9SZuNjggKYp.html
Confusing, yes, I know. But it turns out that Paul Mauriat first made 《臺北之歌》(Song for TaiPei), and 羅大佑 decided to use the music and put in his own lyrics.*
Also for the note, the Cantonese version of the song which came afterwards is 迷情, for those who wanted it.

But hey, without your help, I wouldn’t have bothered investigating that piece. Thank you very much. I like collaborative efforts like this. Hopefully soon enough, this list will be filled.

  19. Thanks for your information. I checked Jacky’s albums on Sunday and I did find that “Song For Taipei” was the original song of “思念”

Well, another song I just found is “單車少女”, whose composers were Elmar Kast and Joachim Horn-Bernges. I thought they were German, and I knew they composed quite a lot of songs for Nino De Angelo. As a result, I checked his albums from 1983 to 1985, and and I found that the original song of “單車少女” should be Nino De Angelo’s “Gar Nicht Mehr”. There is no relative animation in Youtube, so I upload a sample, please check it:

  20. Well, after confirming the original song of “別讓我發現你在哭”, another song, “一吻=兩心印” became apparent, in that I strongly suspected that its original one should be sung by the same singer, or even in the same album. But I was misled by the Youtube’s animation “Tudo com voce”, which in fact was a different version, but which I thought was the same as that of José Augusto.

OK, anyway, the original song of “一吻=兩心印” is “Tudo com voce”, sung by José Augusto too, and also published in the same album “José Augusto” in 1990.

Here is the link, I upload its animation in Youtube, please check it:

  21. Hopeyearn you are super!
David, looks we are almost complete the list la. : )

  22. 馬路英雄 is not quite hard, since the name of composer, Tony Clarkin, implied that it should be a song from the British band Magnum. But its original one was not the most famous song of this band. It was “Rockin’ Chair”, composed by Tony Clarkin and Russ Ballard (Not Bullard), from the Single in 1989.

There is a live version in Youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch#!videos=pG1GvFsozQA&v=upRq8yd_dF8

I think it is OK, but if you do want a CD version, I can upload it in Youtube.

  23. To 铅笔小丁

Well, we have indeed almost filled that list, but in which some of them, I think, are still daunting. As I told you yesterday, at first I thought 夜深 should be easy, but in fact it wasn’t. Also, some of them seem impossible, such as 愛恩斯坦, 圈圈.

But you are right, it is heartening to see the gradual achievement of this list!

  24. The original song of “一往情深” is Trio Rio’s “I’m still in love with you”, Composed by Oliver Heuss and Peter Fessler, from the album “New York – Rio – Tokyo” in 1986. Trio Rio was a short-lived German band, in which Peter Fessler was the vocalist and also the spirit, while Oliver Heuss was the key.

This is the link of “I’m still in love with you”:

  25. 7 songs in 1 fell swoop. This is wonderful. I’m sure every Jacky Cheung fan that knows about this site will be happy to see that this list is actually getting updates.

  26. Yeah. Most of the German and foreign bands had at least a significant amount of success in Japan, so I thought I’d ask some Japanese friends to recognize the tunes for me. Kinda’ like hitting my own head in the wall at certain moments.

  27. Hi David,

A few errors in the list to clarify:

    1. 單車的少女 should be 單車少女
    2. Oh! No!’s original should be “No” by Newton Family
    3. 籃雨 should be 蓝雨
    4. 小姐, 貴姓? is mistakenly repeated.
    5. 俞閒加油站 should be 偷闲加油站
    6. For “In Love with You”, John Laudon is 刘诺生,a HK singer/songwriter. So this should be an original song for Jacky.
    7. 剎那愛’s composer should be 谷村新司
    8. For “Only Something love can do”, shall we put its cover “当我想起你” here? If yes, the original should be Trademark’s Only Love. BTW, lyrics of Only Love is different from “Only something love can do”
    9. What is the original title of “失恋事小”?
    10. Is “我得你“ a cover? I don’t think so since Eric Kwok is also a HK singer/songwriter.
    11. Shall we add his latest Cantonese album’s covers?

  28. Hi, my hunch for 圈圈 is that it probably is an original contributed by 渡边茂树 as the musician had a lot of cooperation with Jacky in the mid 80s.

  29. I think “Hon är Flickan”, the original song of “今晚要盡情”, is the same as “Hon gör allt för att göra mig lycklig”. This is important, in that “Hon gör allt för att göra mig lycklig” was in the album “Tillfälligheternas Spel” in 1990, implying that another song, “夜茫茫”‘s original song, might be in this album (this is Jacky’s strategy, I guess). But which one will be the target? It looks tricky because I do not have this album. In this album, however, I find that only the song “Tillfälligheternas Spel” is in length of more than 5 min, whereas “夜茫茫” is more than 5 min; and accordingly, I surmise “Tillfälligheternas Spel” should be my target. Fortunately, it is!

There is no relative animation in Youtube, so I upload an animation:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RXhyY10-Pk

    Please check it.

  30. To 阿江:

I read your update, just one mistake. “Rockin’ Chair” is actually composed by Tony Clarkin and Russ Ballard, but the singer should be Magnum.

  31. 1. You are indeed correct.
    2. Also misread your previous post on that.
    3. Damn, I can’t believe I made a mistake like that.
    4. There was an issue where I tried to rearrange the cells, and I thought I had deleted the earlier cell which put 小姐, 貴姓? after 緣盡情未了. Fixed now.
    5. I mistyped the 偷 as 俞. But it should be 偷閒, and not 偷閑. But to be sure, I’ll triple check. Thanks.
    6. Thank goodness! One less song that needs to be tracked down. Also, just learned something new. Awesome!
    7. Definately another mistake on my part.
    8. I knew something was strange about the English version of this song.
    9. I have no clue. The CD jacket just had ◯◯◯. So I copied them as is. :P
    10. Just for the note: I’m glad to see 郭偉亮(Eric Kwok)’s return to the 2-man group Swing. I originally thought that he had a single with the song Osaka. I didn’t realize that it was in a collection. I’ll keep it in the list, but cross it out.
    11. You mean pictures of his albums? Yeah, I have most (if not all) of the pictures. I’ll have to wait a few days to get around to it though.

Thanks. You guys always keep me on my toes.
