Science is Awesome!

January 15th, 2012 . Posted in School | No Comments »

Many, many lightyears ago…

Not quite… But around the time I was in the midst of wasting 4 years of my life not learning anything I didn’t learn before, but my parents didn’t think want to support my efforts to take the GED and head straight to college a sophomore in high school, I gathered around with people I knew, and talked about what we wanted to do for the future. It went something like this:

EXT. Outside of class, still within the confides of the wireCampus Grounds – Day

“Ed”

I think I’m gonna’ major in microbiology.

ME

Why would you wanna’ do that to yourself?

“Ed”

I think it’s kinda’ cool, and… You know… You can make a lot of money.

ME (V.O.)

So basically, being Asian, you fell into your parents’ pressure of doing something involving science, to fulfill their desire to brag about their son, who makes beaucoup money, because as an immigrant, money is the key to solve all your problems.

Yep, that’s what I thought at the time. I don’t know if he actually went on with this endeavor, but I in the meantime, went took my “practical” route in life, only to find myself not one, but 2 soul-sucking jobs. Comparisons and contrasts aside though, maybe he actually found science to be fascinating. Just because K-12 education in the US isn’t exactly the most ideal environment for fostering learning, and didn’t capture my imagination, doesn’t mean that someone else wasn’t captivated by learning about science. Maybe we should look at the ways we present things in schools…

In fact, this is pretty awesome, if you think about it! So, maybe it’s time we thought about education reform.

Mercenaries? Or Chinese?

January 10th, 2012 . Posted in Rant | No Comments »

We all know that America has its full share of racists:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45928926/ns/business-retail/t/papa-johns-apologi
zes-chinky-eyes-receipt
a Papa John’s Pizza employee uses a Chinese racial slur to a person of Korean ethnicity.

That pales in comparison to the slaughter of Vincent Chen, and more recently, the suicide of a Chinese-American soldier, serving in the US Army, named Danny Chen. His picture was recently featured in a web posting of Chinese-Americans who died in the Iraq War.
http://www.chinasmack.com/2012/stories/ethnic-chinese-american-soldiers-who-died-in-the-iraq-war.html

Much of the Chinese netizen reaction has not been kind. The netizens made these people out to be “mercenaries”, “traitors to their kind”, or simply didn’t think of them as Chinese at all. This is sad. Their fervor in making all-encompassing statements of smearing these people are no different than the Red Guards of the past.

Now, if you want to criticize Asians who have forsaken their roots, and look down upon the immigrant population, you would have a point. To lump all Asian Americans as such, shows no difference from the oppressors the aforementioned Asians faced. Most of these people serving in the US Army were born in the US, or brought over when they were young. So in other words: They had no choice where they were born, or where their parents would take them.

I am especially offended, being a minority who has lived in a suburban area devoid of any Asian contact, and faced all sorts of treatment at the hands of a majority race. I grew a lot of hatred towards groups of races other than mine. That feeling was tempered, when I moved back to a place with other Asians, and rediscovered this one golden truth: No one race has a monopoly on idiots and assholes.

Maybe if some of these netizens with angst would actually spend their time protesting questionable government and corporate activities, or take the time to help out defensless people:

The world might be a much better place.

To add something. In the last century, there were many overseas Chinese (born and raised overseas) who helped fund efforts to either overthrow or reform China in some way. The result, is that the last moncharchy was overthrown. This could not have been achieved without their help. Back in those days, Chinese were willing to return to China to change things for the better. By excluding these same people from participating in China, they’re essentially casting them aside, and excluding them. In effect, keeping the status quo.

Merry Christmas [Eve]!

Never a dull moment. You tend to forget how bad drivers are, or even how bad of a driver you can be yourself, until you see an accident happen in front of you. What’s worst of all, is when they just drive off, and don’t even bother stopping. Hm… It’s like Deja Vu somehow. Well, I think they caught the assailant, so I guess it is “Merry Christmas” indeed. Didn’t know what to tell the person who got hit when I was told “Merry Christmas”. What do you tell a person in response? Not so merry when you’re still frazzled.

On Race Classification

December 15th, 2011 . Posted in Rant | No Comments »

Reading this article:
http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/15/9461848-dismal-prospects-1-in-2-americans-are-now-poor-or-low-income

And it had this quote:

Broken down by age, children were most likely to be poor or low-income — about 57 percent — followed by seniors over 65. By race and ethnicity, Hispanics topped the list at 73 percent, followed by blacks, Asians and non-Hispanic whites.

Just what the heck do “non-Hispanic whites” stand for? Why not “non-Asian whites”? I mean, there are “white Asians” (http://www.thechinabeat.org/?p=2981 , http://volokh.com/2011/07/29/asians-as-white) supposedly. I guess “non-white black” is just too obvious, maybe. Then of course, where do the “white Hispanics” fit in? Or what about the Asian diaspora that live in Latin America and other parts of the world before immigrating to the US?

If we’re going to be racist and classify people, at least allow them the chance to call themselves something they identify with. Yes, if the Trekkie is a Level 5 Klingon linguist, I believe he should be allowed to call himself a Klingon if he wanted. Heck, we got a lot of random Americans who can’t speak a lick of German, or Italian, but every time Rammstein’s “Du Hast” is played, everyone’s claiming German ancestry (“I’m 1/32 German!”). Or when anyone talks with their arms flailing about, like the inflatable tube man…

…they claim it’s because they’re Italian.

Well, “Ich bin mehr deutsch als du bist” and “Non sei italiano!”How’s THAT for Google Translate?”

A-oOoo-gah!

I think I’ve found my sugar-mamma’ in life: Gan, Lulu!
http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/videos/mother-films-daughter-naked-to-help-her-find-a-boyfriend.html

What should my pickup line be?
“Gan, Lulu, 我能幹了了妳嗎?”
No, that’s just too crass!

“Look, let’s cut to the chase: You’re fairly well-off in China, and I’ve got American citizenship. Both of us have a mutually beneficial assets we’d like to share.”
Yes, the chicks ALWAYS go for that line about the “beneficial assets”!

Inflated Redemption

So I saw this short newsclip about a man who stole $30 back in the 1940s:http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/29/9086913-60-years-on-elderly-man-with-conscience-repays-store-100
Then, after about 70 years later, he finally mustered the courage to give back to the Sears store.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

On the surface, this is a story about redemption of past debts. Stealing $30 in the 1940s, and then giving it back with interest is nice. However, if you factor in the rate of inflation, things look a bit different. To help with this, you should use these calculatiors:
http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi
http://www.usinflationcalculator.com

Realize that $30 back then, is more equivalent to $485 today. Put it in other terms, the $100 he gave back today, is about $6 back then. Hence, It is doubtful the man really paid off his debts to the Sears store, and actually made a profit. Moral of the story? Go steal something, hold onto it for about 70 years, and then just give a little back, because not only is it lucrative (retaining 70% profit), the major news outlets with nothing better to report on will hail you as a hero. You got nothing to lose!

Adrenaline Rush

November 26th, 2011 . Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

All men seek some sort of adrenaline rush through competition. Some men, seek it through ambiguously homoerotic theatrics (aka Wrestling), or whatever floats their boat.

Then there’s me. I go around thinking about silly things like:

VS
JETMAN vs FLYING CAR
Who will win?

Headaches.

November 3rd, 2011 . Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Lately, I’ve been obsessing over this song. Good song, but it doesn’t seem to be relieving the slight headache I’m having. Lately, I’ve been getting more and more of them. Not too fun.

I’ve also been dreaming up a lot of stressful, work-related nightmares. 有時候想,阿爺因腦動脈瘤而死,是否有同樣的病徵?

The Beginning of This Blog

October 4th, 2011 . Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Just a minute ago, I read this article about the ZhengZhou Sex Culture Festival, featuring bondage:
http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/pictures/zhengzhou-sex-culture-festival-features-bondage-lingerie.html

This immediately brought me back to the days when I first started this blog. My first post was a rant, because someone decided to give me crap for a desktop image which featured girls in short-skirt dresses made of condoms. Now, that sounds, provocative, but it’s nowhere near the caliber of what I just read, but it was also part of a charity to raise funds for aids awareness, and the condoms were there to promote the idea of safe sex. The person who commanded I take this picture off apparently really liked aids.

I’d give quotes from the original post, but putting those words up in blockquotes might get picked up by google, and would effect my standing with my current employer.

輔導職業醒覺

September 28th, 2011 . Posted in Rant | No Comments »
